Improving the condition of your pet’s coat.
All pet owners know that the condition of their pet’s coat is an outward reflection of the health of the animal. This is particularly important to the experts in pet grooming: those who show their dogs professionally. Over the past decade there has been enormous interest shown in complementary health and some of the most versatile and successful products on the market are those which contain Aloe Vera.
Aloe Vera (looks like a cactus but isn’t!) has been used in other parts of the world for millennia but has only become well known in this country in the last 20 years. Aloe leaves were imported into this country in the 18th and 19th centuries but curiously were only used on animals (of the non-human variety). The coat of arms for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (granted in 1845) actually has an aloe plant on it!
How can products containing aloe vera help when pet grooming? The pure aloe gel (which is the pulp from inside the leaf) contains many nutrients including vitamins, minerals and enzymes. There is also a very special sugar which has been proven to modulate the immune system. This means that if your animal is ‘run down’ and its coat is not at its best then the animal’s general health will improve and also the coat. Also, if the animal is suffering from a condition where the immune system is working too much (eg. allergies) then the aloe will help with that too.
Over the years of working with these amazing products and seeing many pet groomers getting such benefit I have collected some comments whilst working at dog shows:
‘My dog suffered badly with skin allergy and I spent an absolute fortune at the vet on antibiotics. I was advised to try the aloe (was very, very sceptical!!) but could not believe the result – now been on aloe vera for 11 months and no had one allergy attack.’ DM Renny, Essex
‘After years of trying everything for itchy cavaliers I tried Aloe Vera – after 2 weeks no more itching and healthy shiny coats.’ Liz Rake, Bucks
‘Skin problems in dogs and cats are commonly associated with disorders of the immune system and I found aloe was frequently useful as an aid to controlling these problems’. P. Nimble, retired Vet
‘I have several four-month old kittens and every morning they have 5ml of Aloe Vera Gel in a fork full of tuna. Their coats are shiny, eyes bright and although full of energy are very calm kittens’. B. Wintrip
