Alternatives To Heartgard
There is no doubt that Heartgard for Dogs is both a very effective heartworm medication as well as the most well known brand on the market. It works extremely well at stopping our Dogs getting adult heartworms that can be so dangerous to their health and it ensures that they stay safe.
For those on a very tight budget though there are some alternatives. We can get very cheap Heartgard Plus but it is still out of some peoples price ranges. With that in mind here are some of the cheaper alternatives.
We need to buy what is known as a generic. We are still getting the same effect but for a lower price. One of the most popular is called Valuheart. This is very inexpensive, costing less than $20 for a six month supply, but it works just as Heartgard does. It actually contains the same active ingredient, in this case Ivermectin.
This generic heartwormer is a very good option for many people and for anyone who needs to care for multiple animals it may be the only way to make it truly affordable. Apart from Valuheart we may also use Nuheart or Pro-Heart. They are both good alternatives, and again they are very affordable. There is no need to be worried about using what is known as a generic. They all work just as well.
The main difference is that they usually come in less complex packaging and they usually are not as tasty for the pets to chew on. But we can easily disguise the pills in a small treat to make them more palatable and this is a small price to pay for the low price. The generics are also a great way to still protect our pets when we are out of the main mosquito season. We can simply switch to a lower priced med and continue treating. This is actually cheaper than having to get the yearly check up at the vets if we only treat for part of the year.
